What is Food Insecurity?

What is Food Insecurity?

What is Food Insecurity?

Food insecurity is the condition in which people or households have limited or uncertain access to enough safe, nutritious food for an active, healthy life. It can occur when a person does not always have the financial resources or other means to obtain adequate food. Community farming initiatives are one way to combat this issue by providing access to fresh organic produce, thereby supporting those facing food insecurity.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), food insecurity means:

“The limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.”

A household may be food insecure if it:

Runs out of food before having money to buy more.

Skips meals or reduces portion sizes because of cost.

Relies on food pantries or emergency food assistance.

Has inconsistent access to nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, and protein sources. Food insecurity support systems can help ensure that everyone has reliable access to these essential foods.

What is Food Insecurity?

What is Food Insecurity?

In 2024, nearly 1 in 7 U.S. households (13.7%) faced food insecurity, highlighting the urgent need for food insecurity support in many communities. Across the year, 18.3 million households experienced food insecurity at some point. Alarmingly, nearly 1 in 5 households with children (18.4%) encountered food insecurity during this time. This issue impacts every state and community in America, including working families, seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities, underscoring the importance of initiatives like community farming that provide access to fresh organic produce.

How Can You Help?

America's small farms are disappearing at an alarming rate. Between 2012 and 2022, the U.S. lost more than 208,000 farms, with the greatest declines occurring among the smallest operations, while the number of large farms continued to grow. Supporting community farming not only helps preserve rural communities but also strengthens local food systems and enhances access to fresh organic produce, thereby providing vital food insecurity support to those in need.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps reduce food insecurity by providing low-income individuals and families with resources to purchase food. While SNAP improves access to essential groceries, many communities still face challenges accessing affordable, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Key Points:

  • SNAP helps families meet basic nutritional needs and reduce hunger.
  • Food insecurity is often linked to limited access to healthy food options, not just a lack of food.
  • Many underserved communities lack convenient access to fresh produce.
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables are critical for preventing chronic diseases and supporting overall health.
  • Programs that expand access to fresh produce, such as farmers markets, produce incentives, and community food initiatives, help maximize the impact of SNAP.

By combining SNAP benefits with increased availability of fresh, healthy foods, communities can improve nutrition, strengthen public health, and build long-term food security.

Leafy greens and other fresh organic produce can begin losing important nutrients within hours of harvest. Community farming initiatives allow locally grown produce to reach families faster, helping preserve vitamins, flavor, and freshness while also strengthening our local food system and providing food insecurity support. The average grocery-store vegetable may travel 1,500 miles or more before reaching a consumer, whereas locally grown produce can be harvested and enjoyed within days, helping retain more of its nutritional value.
