Seed Growing Tips

Hands planting seeds in soil-filled egg carton.

Planting

Use containers at least 2–3 inches deep with drainage holes. You can buy seed-starting trays or repurpose items like yogurt cups, milk cartons, or paper cups

Plant seeds at a depth of 2–3 times their diameter, usually one or two seeds per cell.

Cover lightly with soil and mist gently. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering.

Tip:

  • Stick your finger in the soil at the corner of the cell.
  • If the dirt sticks to your finger, it may be too soggy.
  • If your skin comes out completely dry, the soil is far too dry.

Seedlings

Once seedlings emerge, place them in a south-facing window or under grow lights for 10 plus hours per day.

Continue to water seedlings just enough to keep soil moist.

Hardening and Transplant

After your seedlings reach 4-6” tall, they are usually ready to transplant

Before moving seedlings outdoors, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days. Start with a few hours in a sheltered spot and increase exposure daily.

Transplant seedlings into the garden when they are strong and the risk of frost has passed.

Harvest

Harvest vegetables when they show signs of peak ripeness, including vibrant color, firm texture, and appropriate size, ideally in the morning for maximum flavor and freshness.
